Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College on the campus of Columbia University in New York. Currently, there are over 200 collegiate chapters and over 300 alumnae chapters in the United States and Canada. Like many sororities, Alpha Omicron Pi was founded as a fraternity for women, because the term sorority was not yet in widespread use. Notable alumnae include: Courtney Kupets (Olympic gymnast), Ashley Crow (actress) and Wendy Chamberlin (US ambassador to Pakistan).
