Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded on March 9th 1856, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Noble Leslie DeVotie, was the ringleader of a group of 9 men, he created the ritual, grip and chose the name. As of 2011, the fraternity has chapters and colonies in all 50 states and provinces. In March 2014, the fraternity announced that it was eliminating the tradition of pledging. Notable alumni include: George Bodenheimer (President of ESPN), William T Dillard (founder of Dillard's) and William McKinley (25th U.S. President).
