Sigma Nu was secretly founded at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia in October 1868. It began as a secret Legion of Honor before it was publicly announced in January 1869. Currently, Sigma Nu has over 170 active chapters in the United States and Canada, and has initiated over 230,000 members since its founding. Notable alumni include: Eli and Archie Manning (NFL qbs), Pat Riley (NBA coach), Paul Rudd (actor) and Paul 'Bear' Bryant (NCAA football coach).
